Circle Paintings for Barns
James Mellick is offering a new item from the Mellick Atelier which he would prefer to call "circle paintings". These "quilt" paintings which measure 4 feet in diameter are designed for exterior display on barns and homes, but these are also fine paintings suitable for interior decoration. These are contemporary, hard-edge acrylic paintings on primed and sealed one half inch sign plywood and are final coated with two layers of acrylic polymer and one layer of polyurethane. Mellick has 30 years experience as a colorist and painter and intends that no two circle paintings will be alike. The paintings shown on this page are his first circle paintings. Please return to this page occasionally to discover new additions.
Mellick has added these exterior "quilt" paintings to his offerings because he is interested in reaching a broader base of rural clients who would appreciate the tradition of the hex sign. While his circle paintings will borrow from the Pennsylvania Dutch tradition, his imagery, designs and sophisticated colors will go beyond the tradition as a contemporary folk art form.
When Jim Mellick moved his studio from Columbus to settle and develop Heartwood Farm, he wanted to find an art form that would reflect his new environment and rural heritage. His earliest ancestor from Germany was Godfrey Moelich who settled in New Jersey in 1747. Later generations of "fancy Dutch" Melicks and Mellicks moved to Pennsylvania and then further west. In 1989 at Rutgers, Andrew D. Mellick, jr. published "Story of An Old Farm", detailing the early family history and 18th Century life in New Jersey.
In addition to the designs displayed on this page, circle paintings can be designed to the individual interests of the client. The price for each circle painting shown, is $400 not including shipping, taxes and installation. There may be an additional charge for commissioned designs.
