We regret that we are no longer breeding Weimaraner pups. On September 6, 2006 we had our "Queen Mother" Holly spayed.  She was great mother but had a difficult time in the last whelping.  With poor advice we waited too long to induce labor after she stopped eating and she did not have the strength to push when labor was induced.  She had an emergency C-section and delivered seven females and three males in the vet's office.  Unfortunately four of our largest, beautiful silver females were not breathing when we brought them home and Holly was still too drugged to take care of them for the first two hours.  We worked frantically with each pup trying to revive them with mouth to mouth resuscitation and dabs of corn syrup in their mouths.  We were in tears.  We buried all four puppies on our property.

We learned several things from this experience.  First, if the dam has not gone into labor after one day without eating, induce labor while she still has the strength. Second, don't let your vet give general anesthesia--use a local--because the dam needs to be able to take care of the babies right away. Third, make sure the vet will keep the babies at the hospital and not send them home before they are stable and the dam is feeding them.  Avoid Friday afternoons near closing time.

Pups will be ready around the second week of December 2005.  They are AKC registered and will have their first shots, a  buy-back health guarantee and outdoor potty experience. Both parents are on the premises.  Spending the first three weeks in our master bedroom and the last five weeks in a heated kennel in our basement, these pups will have been pampered for eight weeks, from their birth to their departure.  We put an extraordinary amount of time into their care by monitoring their weight gain, nutrition and hygiene daily.  The price for a male or female is $450.  The quality of the dogs would make your travel to Heartwood worthwhile .  We will not crate and ship a dog because our reputation and demand makes it unnecessary.

The 2005 litter is 3 males and 3 females.  Three pups are spoken for.  We are getting many calls preferring female pups.  Height and size are legitimate issues but if the fear is "humping"grandma's leg, my male never exhibited that behavior.  I followed up on the four males placed from 2002's litter and they too have behaved themselves.  Such mounting of legs is a matter of dominance which may come from a poor self -image.  I think our Weims know they are beautiful but they also know their place in the human and dog relationship.

We prefer to get to know the owners and evaluate the lifestyle of their potential homes to avoid having a dog end up in a shelter.  These dogs are family dogs and need companionship and do not do well being left alone a full work day.  They need space and exercise and we prefer that city dwellers have a fenced in yard.  By six weeks we have a better understanding of the pups individual personalities--who is the hunter, who is dominant (in the litter), who is needy and who is the quiet loner.  They are wonderful with children of all ages.  The males are as calm and gentle as the females and do not exhibit dominant behavior that many people fear.  References and pictures of last years pups as adults, are available.

Here are the pups nursing at 2 weeks.  Eyes are just beginning to open.  Holly is a fantastic mother.
