Penland School of Crafts
Teaching Wood Sculpture, Summer 1996
The following people were my wood sculpture students at Penland during the Summer of 1996 but I'm not sure of the names with the faces. Visitor, if you know these people please help me out. I know Pete Blumberg is giving me (James Mellick) the rabbit ears. I believe that Liz Falletta is on the far left, followed by Hudson Cress and Chris Brandel. Dan Galante and Al Crivelli from Greenville, S.C. are next. The young woman to my right would be Elizabeth Meyer and the last two fellows would be Michael Sperow and Aron Doron. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Teaching at the Penland School of Crafts, near Penland, NC, was my most rewarding experience in teaching. It was hardly work and more like an intense vacation as one is allowed to concentrate on the passion of one's craft in a beautiful mountain setting with like-minded people. The students were the most talented and motivated art students with whom I have worked. No lighting creative fires under these folks. My job was to simply direct this creative energy for a few weeks. In a small way, I would like to duplicate and share a fraction of this experience with my students at the Heartwood School of Art.
