Why Study Art at Heartwood?
2005 Heartwood Staff
Mission Statement
Penland School of Crafts
Dear Friends of Heartwood,
This summer's courses have been a grand and rewarding experiment in this
"maiden voyage" of the Heartwood School. We got off to a slow start
in our promotions and have operated "in the red" with small enrollments,
just to get the word out and to establish our reputation looking ahead to
the Summer of 2006. This will provide time for parents and adult students
to plan ahead for next summer.
There is a possibility of offering more courses this Fall, most likely in the form of weekend workshops but this depends upon demand. As the director, I have several upcoming commitments, including teaching art at Urbana University starting in August and a major exhibition at Spring Arbor College in November. For this reason, we are putting additional course offerings for this summer on hold. A review of this summer's activities and possible future workshops is listed below.
Amateur and professional artists have a special bond and the interest in visual art reflects the cultural health of a community. For this reason, I am always willing to review your art portfolio, make suggestions and give you a tour of the facilities--but please make an appointment.
Sincerely,
James Mellick

Introduction For Parents and Adult Students:
Class Size and Tuition Payment and Reimbursement
Graphic classes, such as painting and drawing
will be limited to a maximum of 10 students and will be cancelled if there
are fewer that 5 students. Adult sculpture classes will be limited
to a maximum of 7 students and will be cancelled if there are fewer than
3 students. This is to insure adequate space and a quality teacher
to student ratio. On occasion, "team teaching" will take place in some
classes. Payment is due upon registration and is refundable up to one
week before the class starts . Tuition will be refunded or can be applied
to another course, if there are not enough students to proceed with any given
class. Payment will be made by cash or check made payable to
the instructor for a given course.
Required Tools and Materials
In this first Summer Workshop, Heartwood will
supply certain expendable materials for the workshop classes. This
includes papers, drawing media, student grade oil and acrylic paints,
watercolors, pre-stretched canvases, clay, cement, plaster, soft stones,
specialized sculpture tools, grinders, bits and files. Children's classes
will be totally supplied with tools and materials. Some tools, like
paint brushes and wood gouges, are as personal as your tooth brush and will
be supplied by the student. Heartwood will provide tools and materials that
will have limited use to the student beyond the workshop. Note special items
required of the student in course descriptions.
